Biology as Art winner UWA LAWRENCE WILSON ART GALLRY Prayer stromatolites lake thetis conservation plant

'Prayer' 2018, Giclee print on Canson Rag Photographique 310gsm 43W x 30H x 6D, a part of the LAWRENCE WILSON ART GALLERY Collection.

Winner of the Vice Chancellor's Award, at the "Biology As Art" exhibition and awards November 2018.

This photo was taken at Lake Thetis, close to Cervantes.

Inside the hyper-saline waters of Lake Thetis one can find the Stormatolites. They seem like rocks but they are actually living things, the oldest living lifeform on our planet.

The plant in this photograph overlooks the Stormatolites in Lake Thetis. In my eyes, this plant holds a resemblance to prayer-beads, and symbolizes a prayer for both preservation and evolvement. I believe in joining forces toward protecting our planet, and this plant depicted in this photo reminds me of that.

The 2018 Biology As art Exhibition and Awards ... culminated in an environmental discussion panel and performance event “Plastics, Plastics Everywhere” and awards presentation at the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery organized by the Development and Alumni Relations Team. ...The exhibition and awards event was a huge success. Gallery staff reported a steady stream of visitors to the exhibition all week and more than 500 votes were cast in the Head of School and People’s Choice Award. The exhibition space and the artworks were both beautiful and powerful. Professor Sarah Dunlop (Head: School of Biological Sciences) described the exhibition as “breathtaking” to the Vice Chancellor and Faculty of Science Executive, as indeed it was".
